You would have to choose an oversized casket if your loved one is taller than the average American. According to data from the US public health agency CDC, the average height in the United States is 5 feet 9 inches for men over 20 and 5 feet 4 inches for 20 plus women. Similarly, the average weight for men over 20 is 199.8 pounds and for women over 20 is 170.8 pounds. If your loved one weighs more than the American average or is taller than the American average, you may have to consider buying caskets for a large person. Fortunately, large caskets and XXL caskets are available and buying them should not pose much of a problem.
An oversized casket has an exterior length of 83 inches or more, width of 28 inches or more and a height of 23 inches or more. This oversized casket may also be called a 28-inch casket. The interiors of the size 28 inch casket comes with the dimensions of length: 79 inches or more, width of 27.75 inches or more and height of 14 inches or more. Similarly, there are also larger caskets of 29 inch size, where the width is an inch more than the 28-inch caskets. Large caskets of the XXL size are called XXL caskets and their sizes are generally in the 40 to 44-inch range. The size 40-inch casket has exterior dimensions of 84-inch length, 40-inch width and 24-inch height, while the size 44-inch XXL caskets come with an exterior of 44-inch width, with length and height the same as the size-40 casket. When you are choosing a casket online, you would have to go through all these dimensions to choose well.

Steel oversized caskets
Steel oversized caskets are among the most common types available, known for their durability and affordability. These caskets are typically made from varying gauges of steel, with thicker steel providing greater security and a higher price point. Steel caskets are widely available and offer a range of options in terms of design and finish.
Bronze or copper oversized caskets
Bronze and copper caskets are premium metal options that are prized for their rust-resistant properties and long-lasting durability. These materials are more expensive than steel, and they may require purchasing from specialty stores to find the right size and fit. However, the investment in a bronze or copper casket is often justified by the peace of mind it provides.
Wooden oversized caskets
Wooden caskets are crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, maple, pine, or walnut, offering a classic and natural appearance. These caskets are highly customizable, with various finishes and designs available. Wooden caskets are often more affordable than metal options, and they provide a beautiful and timeless way to honor a loved one.
Cremation caskets
For those who plan to cremate their loved one, oversized cremation caskets are an option. These caskets are typically made from wood or other natural materials and are designed to be used temporarily before cremation. Due to their simple construction and temporary nature, cremation caskets are generally more affordable than traditional burial caskets.
Diy oversized caskets
Some families choose to create their own oversized caskets, either by purchasing a DIY kit or constructing one from scratch. This option allows for complete customization and personalization, making it a meaningful and unique tribute. While this approach may not be for everyone, it offers a way to create a casket that perfectly fits the individual's size and personality.
Green oversized caskets
Green caskets, also known as eco-friendly or biodegradable caskets, are designed for natural burials and are made from materials like bamboo, willow, or cardboard. These caskets are intended to biodegrade over time, making them an environmentally conscious choice. Green caskets are often more affordable and align with sustainable practices, making them a popular option for those who prioritize eco-friendliness.
Alternatives to Oversized Caskets
Natural casket: A natural casket made from eco-friendly materials like bamboo or wicker can provide more space inside and is often more affordable than traditional caskets. These caskets are also a sustainable option for those who prioritize environmental consciousness.
Burial shroud: A burial shroud is a traditional fabric wrap used to cover the deceased, eliminating the need for a casket. This option is adaptable to any body size and is a budget-friendly alternative that aligns with natural burial practices.
Cremation: Choosing cremation over a traditional burial eliminates the need for a casket altogether. Families can opt for an urn to hold the ashes, which vary in price depending on design and material. Urns are entirely optional, and cremation offers flexibility in how the remains are handled.
Urn burial: For those who wish to have a burial site, urn burial is a cost-effective alternative to traditional casket burial. Many cemeteries offer urn burial options, and it is also possible to bury an urn on private property, depending on local laws.
DIY casket: Building your own casket allows for complete customization, ensuring that it fits perfectly and reflects the individual's personality. There are many online tutorials and guides available for those interested in this option.
Donation: Donating a body to science is a selfless act that can contribute to medical research and education. Many donation organizations cover the cost of cremation, and the body is often returned to the family for final arrangements.

Oversized caskets are generally only for larger people, but exceptions exist. For instance, many people use oversized caskets if they happen to be lower cost than traditional, standard-sized caskets. Because sometimes funeral homes have a difficult time selling these oversized options, they often offer deals.
Many people buy oversized caskets at a reduced cost and then will layer the cushion to ensure their loved one fits perfectly inside. On the other hand, it is sometimes possible for morticians to arrange the larger body in such a way to fit standard-sized caskets. When shopping for a casket, there is more flexibility nowadays than ever before.
Material of Oversize Casket
Metal cCaskets: These are typically your heaviest options on the market, often weighing in at over 300 pounds. This is especially true for solid bronze or copper models. Even stainless steel caskets are usually well over 200 pounds.
Wood caskets: These come in several varieties and weights, but will generally be lighter than metal. Hardwood caskets may still reach 300 pounds, but some softwoods or composite wood products will be significantly lighter.
Fiberglass caskets: The lightest option on the market is usually a fiberglass casket, which can be under 100 pounds in many cases. However, these are often more expensive than other options and may not have the same level of durability or strength.
Will an Oversized Casket Fit in a Standard Grave Liner or Burial Vault
Most cemeteries require the use of a grave liner or burial vault. Encasing a casket in a grave liner or burial vault prevents the ground around the grave from shifting as the casket decays. This is how cemeteries prevent uneven ground and keep maintenance costs down.
Standard burial vaults have a width of around 30 inches, so a small uptick in the casket size won’t affect the burial vault. However, if an even greater width is needed, then a larger burial vault or grave liner will add a little extra to the total cost.
Where Can You Purchase an Oversized Casket
Your local funeral home will have oversized caskets available in their inventory, so they will be the easiest and most convenient option for you. If they don’t have what you want on site, they can put in an order specifically for your needs. Alternatively, you can purchase an oversized casket online. However, it will be your responsibility to ensure that the funeral home has access to the casket.
How to Carry a Coffin: 7 Essentials You Need to Know
Safety first
Before you even consider carrying that coffin, no matter how close you were to the deceased, you need to think about your own physical health. Do you have any knee, shoulder, neck or back injuries that could potentially be aggravated by carrying the coffin? Do not risk injuring yourself further, it may be best to sit this one out.
How many people should carry a coffin
There’s another question you don’t see asked every day. At the last funeral, for example, did you count the number of people carrying the coffin? Generally, though, most coffins are built with six handles, with three at each side. So, it’s most common for there to be six. However, many coffins have an additional two handles on the front and back, so you can, if you want to be a little different, have up to eight people carrying the coffin. Many hands make light work.
How do you lift a coffin
Coffins can be lifted and carried on the shoulders, as we’ve all seen, or lower using the handles, if they’re loadbearing. Although it doesn’t quite have the dramatic effect of the shoulder carry, it’s less arduous on those shoulders and upper arms. It’s also ideal when the ground is slippery or uneven.
Plan it out
Just as you’d plan out the route of the wedding cars and how the blushing bride is going to make her way up the aisle, you need to put the same planning into the funeral procession. Plan out the lift. Make sure there’s a clear pathway, both above your heads and underfoot. You don’t want to be caught unawares on a slippery area of ground. Walk through each part of the journey too, to make sure you know where there are any low-hanging doorways, steps and uneven ground.
We’ve already covered the number of men and women you need; you now need to arrange them, so everything is balanced. Make sure the people opposite each other carrying the coffin are similar heights. Usually, the shorter people go towards the front. Have someone beside each person to help with getting it up there.
It’s not headfirst
No matter how headstrong or brave the person was, the tradition is, and particularly if they’re going to a crematorium, coffins are carried feet first. While most coffins are tapered at one end for this reason, some aren’t so easy to distinguish one end from the other. A name plaque or something can be used to denote it though.
Consider the weight
This should be done when you’re planning it out, but you need to consider not just the weight of the person inside, but the coffin itself. If it’s 90kgs or more, you’ll need the traditional six. If, though, it’s closer to 125kg, you may have to consider an alternative.
Work together
Carrying the coffin is all about working together. Ensure you’ve all got stable stances, with your feet apart and got a good grip. All that’s left is to get to it. Work orderly, with someone leading everything and work in unison.
